About Red Cross Club

"As a humanitarian club on campus, the TPHS ARC club aims to better the community by participating in various volunteer service events. A main goal is to do our part in creating a better world, and spreading this goal with friends and family to form a greater force for good. At the same time, we work to keep close with our local Red Cross chapter (San Diego/ Imperial Counties Chapter) to focus on specific disasters and emergency relief efforts, and aid the well-known humanitarian organization in their amazing efforts to better the global community." - Katharine Yang, 2010

TPHS ARC was originally founded by club president Tommy Wang for the 2009-2010 school year, and reestablished by successor Katharine Yang in the spring of 2010.

American Red Cross school clubs are youth service groups that help the Red Cross fulfill its humanitarian mission of preparing for, preventing and responding to emergencies. Working closely with our local chapter and a school advisor, club members participate in Red Cross service projects that help their schools, their communities and the world. The San Diego and Imperial Counties Chapter believes youth have the potential to make a difference in huge ways. In our eyes, they are a vital resource bringing energy, innovation and inspiration to the American Red Cross.

We are part of the San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross:

The vision of the American Red Cross San Diego/Imperial Counties Chapter is to be the most trusted community service organization in education, preparation and response to natural disasters and human emergencies.
The Red Cross is not a governmental agency, and relies on community donations of time and money to do its work.  The San Diego/Imperial Counties chapter, founded in 1898, responds to an emergency nearly every 24 hours.
The American Red Cross is guided by seven fundamental principles:  humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.

In 2008-09, our chapter offered the following services:
  • Community education - provided training for 91,000 people in health and safety classes including disaster preparedness, First Aid, CPR, and aquatics.
  • Disaster response and relief - responded to 229 disasters: fires, floods, storms & hazardous materials.
  • Services to the Armed Forces (SAF) - provided emergency social services to military personnel and their families, more than 20,000 total cases and assistance to 2,000 families per month.
  • Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) (state contract) - nutrition counseling for pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants, and children under the age of five; 36,500 clients per month.
This chapter serves more than 3 million people in San Diego County, covering 4,255 square miles, and 150,000 people in Imperial County, covering 4,597 square miles.
