Hurricane Sandy Fundraiser

Hey everyone,

Please keep checking back on this website to catch updates on this fundraiser to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy! Our fundraiser will consist of a sale of cookies, cake pops, and other baked goods, along with some good old-fashioned hot chocolate.

Various tasks will be posted that you guys as club members can take up to earn volunteer hours. Also let us know if you have free time after school anytime during this week or the next to help us with all the aspects of this event we're planning.

STAY TUNED FOR MORE TASKS YOU CAN DO FOR VOLUNTEER HOURS!

As of right now, hours will be given for:

  • Donations of cookies or other baked goods
  • Designing flyers to advertise this event to the rest of the school

Please make sure to email tpredcross@gmail.com BEFORE you take up one of these tasks, so that we know who to expect what from -- and so you get the hours you deserve.

Thanks guys,
Katharine Yang, President

First club meeting of the 2011-2012 school year!

Hey everyone,

First of all, thank you to those of you who came to our first club meeting. The Powerpoint presentation used today will be available in its entirety on our "Downloads" page. Click "More" on the left-hand sidebar to find the extended website where this page is.

Furthermore, all of our club's upcoming events will be available on that respective page, which will be updated very soon. Please keep checking back -- and if you need to know of a certain event more urgently, definitely feel free to email in your inquiries to tpredcross (at) gmail (dot) com!

Thanks again, and see you at our next club meeting (which happens to be next week's Thursday).

2012-2013 Club Day: Introduction

Hey everyone!

Thanks for your interest in the Torrey Pines High School American Red Cross ClubI'm Katharine, and I'm going to be the president of the club this year. I know that a lot of you were probably wondering what this club is all about, so I'm hoping that this introductory email will clear up at least the majority of the questions you have. Our first club meeting is November 8, 2012 in Room 24 (Olson).

WHAT'S THE TPHS ARC?
Our club is connected to the local San Diego/Imperial Counties chapter of the American Red Cross. Our chapter provides us with Red Cross, disaster-relief, or first-aid skill specific events to do. For example, this includes the Holiday Mail for Heroes project we will be working on very soon (sending holiday letters to soldiers deployed and in hospitals still in the states). Learn more about this project HERE. It also includes the Save-a-Life San Diego event where you can become certified in CPR.

At the same time, we as a club on campus provide many opportunities to rack up those community service hours I know you all strongly desire. These volunteering opportunities are all local events hand-picked by the board to take TPHS ARC members to, and are always extremely fun ways to get out into the community and get some volunteer credit for it. Examples of past events include volunteering by holding a giant Gingerbread Man-shaped balloon in the Big Bay Balloon Parade, meeting furry friends at various Helen Woodward Animal Center hosted events, or handing out beverages to thirsty runners at the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon

And of course, we work towards having a strong presence at home on the Torrey Pines High School campus. Sometimes we work with other notable service clubs, and occasionally we hold fun Red Cross merchandise or bake sales after-school.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED, AND SOME RULES
Don't run away just yet, I promise these aren't horribly terrifying rules. There are just a few basics:

  • To become a member of this club, please fill out the membership application available HERE. After you sign up for an account, log back in, and there will be three forms you need to fill out and bring to the next meeting to turn in. Or, you can scan and email them to me at any time.
  • Our club will have meetings this year on 2-4-6 Thursdays in Mrs. Olson's room (24).
  • Members are not required to come to every meeting, but it is strongly recommended. At the end of the year, member counts for every meeting are analyzed, and some will be awarded extra hours -- the more meetings you attend, the better chance you have for earning a few extra hours later on.
  • You do not count as an officially active member unless you earn 30 community service hours with the club.

New Red Cross Volunteer System!

Hey guys,

Although last year I had a good time updating this Blogger site for TPHS ARC (sarcasm, friends), I'm happy to announce that Torrey Pines' American Red Cross Club has been chosen, along with the rest of the clubs in our chapter, to beta a new volunteer system that makes everything easier!

It's pretty much a Facebook-esque system just for Red Cross, where you can find our clubs events (and the other Red Cross clubs', if you're interested in branching out), etc. You'll be able to submit your hours online (eliminating human error and frustration if your hours don't get logged by a board member manually), sign up for events, and more. Obviously because it is in beta, the site is still in its rudimentary form. However, this is still a fun and convenient opportunity for our club and chapter.

You don't need to sign up for an account separately or anything -- you're given a log-in as soon as your membership application gets put in. If you have any questions about how the system works, feel free to email us at tpredcross@gmail.com!

This site and the extended site will become less active mid-October, once all new members have been entered into the new system.

Thanks for being such wonderful members, and talk to you later!

Cesar Chavez Canvassing Project

Hey guys,

If you're not sure what our special Red Cross-affiliated project is for this season, it would be the canvassing project that is taking place on March 31, 2012 (Saturday)!

We're scheduling training to occur after school, most likely within the days of March 26-30, 2012, and the actual final date will be decided very soon (according to most votes and least scheduling conflicts among members).

Essentially we'll be taking a fun field trip down to Red Cross HQ to meet up with all the other Red Crossers from other schools in our district, as well as the coordinators and leaders from the San Diego/Imperial Counties Red Cross Chapter, and working together to canvass several neighborhoods for disaster awareness.

If you have scheduling conflicts with either the training or the actual event date, make sure you email tpredcross@gmail.com so that we can find you a make-up event to participate in (because this event is actually one of the most important and is mandatory for participation).

The event will be running from 10:00AM until 1:00PM that day.

Thanks for being such fun and cool members! Don't forget to always show your TPHS ARC pride! <3

Cake Pop Fundraiser: Donations

Hey guys,

We're planning on holding a cake pop fundraiser after school on final days for the end of this semester. If all goes well, we'll be able to do it -- and raise money for the club. (:

Those that want to help out should email tpredcross@gmail.com to let us know. I can then send you more detailed information like when and where to meet up to help out.

What we need most of all besides dedicated members/volunteers are a whole bunch of cake-making materials! Generous volunteers will be awarded with their deserved community service hours of course.

Here's a general list of ingredients* we need donations of:
  • cake flour or all-purpose flour
  • sugar (above and beyond: confectioner's sugar)
  • salt
  • butter
  • eggs
  • milk
  • cream
  • cream cheese
  • vanilla extract
  • baking powder
  • vegetable shortening
  • vegetable oil
  • chocolate
  • frosting
*if you're a champion cake-baker and know that we totally need more things than what is on that list, then feel free to (and please do) save the day and donate that for us :]

Email in if you plan on donating things so we know which ingredients we do or do not need any more of.

We also would appreciate you bringing in other materials:
  • cake beater (and whisks)
  • flour sifter
  • measuring cups
  • cake pans
  • wax paper or parchment paper
  • large bowls
  • lollipop sticks (available in craft stores)

Trust me, you'll get a ton of credit if you bring the things on these lists in; I would know, I'm the president. You guys have no idea how much we appreciate awesome active AND generous members.

♥ x, Kath.
