2012-2013 Club Day: Introduction

Hey everyone!

Thanks for your interest in the Torrey Pines High School American Red Cross ClubI'm Katharine, and I'm going to be the president of the club this year. I know that a lot of you were probably wondering what this club is all about, so I'm hoping that this introductory email will clear up at least the majority of the questions you have. Our first club meeting is November 8, 2012 in Room 24 (Olson).

WHAT'S THE TPHS ARC?
Our club is connected to the local San Diego/Imperial Counties chapter of the American Red Cross. Our chapter provides us with Red Cross, disaster-relief, or first-aid skill specific events to do. For example, this includes the Holiday Mail for Heroes project we will be working on very soon (sending holiday letters to soldiers deployed and in hospitals still in the states). Learn more about this project HERE. It also includes the Save-a-Life San Diego event where you can become certified in CPR.

At the same time, we as a club on campus provide many opportunities to rack up those community service hours I know you all strongly desire. These volunteering opportunities are all local events hand-picked by the board to take TPHS ARC members to, and are always extremely fun ways to get out into the community and get some volunteer credit for it. Examples of past events include volunteering by holding a giant Gingerbread Man-shaped balloon in the Big Bay Balloon Parade, meeting furry friends at various Helen Woodward Animal Center hosted events, or handing out beverages to thirsty runners at the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon

And of course, we work towards having a strong presence at home on the Torrey Pines High School campus. Sometimes we work with other notable service clubs, and occasionally we hold fun Red Cross merchandise or bake sales after-school.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED, AND SOME RULES
Don't run away just yet, I promise these aren't horribly terrifying rules. There are just a few basics:

  • To become a member of this club, please fill out the membership application available HERE. After you sign up for an account, log back in, and there will be three forms you need to fill out and bring to the next meeting to turn in. Or, you can scan and email them to me at any time.
  • Our club will have meetings this year on 2-4-6 Thursdays in Mrs. Olson's room (24).
  • Members are not required to come to every meeting, but it is strongly recommended. At the end of the year, member counts for every meeting are analyzed, and some will be awarded extra hours -- the more meetings you attend, the better chance you have for earning a few extra hours later on.
  • You do not count as an officially active member unless you earn 30 community service hours with the club.
